 2017 Preview 


       St. Clair County finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year St. Clair County finished seventh in Class 5A region five with a 1-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

       St. Clair County was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Fighting Saints want to be competitive. They only averaged 17.7 points a game.

       St. Clair County struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 38.2 points a game.

       Since 2010, St. Clair County has gone a combined 31-42. Their 42.0% winning percentage ranks 34th in Class 5A over the past seven seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, St. Clair County has managed to compile a record of 153-119. Their 56.0% winning percentage ranks 24th in Class 5A and 129th in the AHSAA.

Lance Smith leaves the St. Clair County football program after three successive 3-7 seasons.


Matt Glover arrives at St. Clair County from Pinson Valley where he led the football program for the past eight seasons. His teams went a combined 50-41 and 4-7 in the post season. His overall record, including three years at Moody stands at 64-58.



       Coach Glover's overall record as a head football coach in eleven season stands at 64-58 (52.5%). Over the course of his career, Coach Glover's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of eight times .

       The St. Clair County Fighting Saints will play in Class 5A region five during the 2017 season.

       This season, the Fighting Saints will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region five.

      Jayce Fisher returns for his Senior season after completing 108 of 220 passes for 1,473 yards and 13 touchdowns. He also rushed for 176 yards.

      Junior Javarrius Johnson returns after catching 44 passes for 761 yards and 5 touchdowns along with Senior Grayson Beatty who gathered in 29 passes for 365 yards and 3 touchdowns.

      The defense returns Junior defensive end Jovan Ousley who registered 6 sacks for 54 yards in losses last season.

       The Fighting Saints open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Lincoln on Friday, September 1 at Keith Howard Memorial Stadium. Last year the Lincoln Golden Bears finished with an overall record of 4-8 and in fourth place in Class 5A region four. The Golden Bears lost in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs to Jackson by a score of 52-7.

       St. Clair County and Lincoln have met a total of 25 times on the football field. The Fighting Saints have a 9-15-1 record against the Golden Bears. They last met in 2016 with St. Clair County winning by a score of 34-28.
